Accept Cards Annual Charity Fundraiser

Written By Jasmine Gilbert, Accept Cards Ltd

On Saturday 21st July 2012, 6 Brave Men, 8 Brave Women, one Brave Child and a Dog named Destiny, set out to take on the mighty Hellvelyn for the annual ACL Charity Fundraiser.

The aim was to raise £1000 in sponsorship for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, a wonderful charity who care for and provide support to families of children with life limiting illnesses

Everyone was on the road for 7am with the intention of starting the climb at 9am sharp, apart from a few complications (due to someone’s dodgy directions!) we all got to the meeting point in good time and some of us even managed a quick bacon buttie before we started!

Unfortunately we had to reassess the original plan of climbing Hellvelyn as we feared some members of the team may struggle due to recent health issues, instead wedecided to take on The Old Man of Coniston, although it isn’t quite as big as Hellvelyn we wanted to complete the challenge as a full team.

The walk started really well, the weather was perfect and the first couple of miles were fairly easy going, until we reached the mines where it became rather unsteady underfoot.

People started to feel tired as we neared our first break but team mates really pulled together in providing motivation and encouragement.

The team were very pleased when we finally reached the lake where we re-grouped and stopped for a well-deserved lunch.

The second leg of the ascent was a great deal steeper than the first but the breath taking views we were rewarded with made it all worthwhile.

As expected the youngsters lead the way from this point but there were some surprisingly impressive efforts from the ‘less fit’ members of our group. Each person had their own tactics for getting through the final slog, some scoffed pistachios or jelly beans others thought about the pub at the top!

We ALL made it to the top within 3 hours and i speak on behalf of everyone when i say the panoramic view of the Lake District was worth every cramp, blister and bucket of sweat.

A fantastic day was had by all and I am delighted to announce that we reached our target and raised £1000 for The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice!!

Thank you so much to those who have supported us this year!!!
