Closure of Grace’s Place in Bury

Following a consultation with staff, we are very sad to announce that Grace’s Place will now close.

Despite extensive media coverage, support from local politicians and council members and generous offers of support from the community, we have not been able to secure enough additional funding to keep our doors open and continue to deliver services to local families from Grace’s Place in Bury.

We have now met with all of the families concerned and have agreed with them how they want to receive their services in the future and transition arrangements are being put in place. Almost all of the families have opted to continue to receive services via Forget Me Not through our hospice in Huddersfield or as part of the hospice at home offer.

All families will be offered access to our transport fund to ensure the costs of travelling a little further to their hospice of choice does not disadvantage them in any way. Thank you to our generous supporters who have given us money for this fund.

We will now negotiate with our landlord and aim to be out of the building by the end of August. We will be asking families if there is some equipment or toys that they would like to have for use in their own homes. In addition, we have invited a number of other children’s hospices to visit the premises and take any equipment that would be helpful for them to have. In this way, all of the equipment donated or paid for from our donors will still be used by children with life limiting conditions, many of whom live in the Manchester area. Any remaining equipment will be offered to other local children’s charities or children’s services.

We deeply regret having to make this decision. But it is a small comfort that we have been able to close the service in a planned way ensuring we meet our responsibilities to staff, volunteers and families. We would like to thank everyone who has supported us in trying to develop Grace’s Place, and particularly we would like to thank our staff who continue to work with us to support the transition of our families and secure support for Forget Me Not.
