Luke’s story
I meet so many new people. Everyone knows my name now, and you get to know a great bunch of people. You get to see smiles on people face’s when you’re serving them – sometimes you get customers giving you extra money, too, as a donation to the charity which it makes it all worthwhile.
“I’m Luke and I’ve been volunteering at one of Forget Me Not’s shops for coming up to a year now.”
What prompted you to volunteer at the shop?
“So I was going through a bit of a tough time, I wasn’t in school or college and I needed something to prompt me to get out. I have a friend who I’m very close with and she has a disability which has been very hard on her. Seeing that first hand, I wanted to help people as much as I could, so really I’m doing it more for her than myself. If it wasn’t for charities like this, she wouldn’t be able to have got through it and be able to do the things she can do now.”
What do you get out of your role with Forget Me Not?
“It’s the people aspect, really, I meet so many new people. Everyone knows my name now, and you get to know a great bunch of people. You get to see smiles on people face’s when you’re serving them – sometimes you get customers giving you extra money, too, as a donation to the charity which it makes it all worthwhile.”
How our volunteers make a difference!

Of course, it’s not just time that our volunteers donate. They also bring their skills, enthusiasm, passion, ideas, energy and experience, all of which enhances everything we do.
Our reception volunteers welcome every visitor and help make children and families feel at home.
Our garden volunteers keep our garden looking beautiful so our families can make the most of every space – from the play areas, the woodland walk or the memory garden.
Our fundraising volunteers not only raise money, they raise awareness about Forget Me Not across the region.
Our volunteer drivers make sure donated furniture gets to where it needs to be, help us put on events and, in a new role, are helping ensure that children and families who might find it difficult to access our support are helped to get to and from the hospice.
Our level 2 shop volunteers are able to run our shops without a staff member being present, meaning our shops literally wouldn’t open without our volunteers.
Our care volunteers help with our support groups, making sure families have everything they need to benefit from these valuable sessions and freeing up our specialist staff to work with individuals more closely.
Our trustees and independent advisors are all volunteers too, providing essential governance and leadership for our charity.
All in all, Forget Me Not would not be here without volunteers, so a huge thank you to everyone who gives up their time and shares their expertise and passion with us. We appreciate every single one of you!
