Gather your team for the exciting return of our Dragon Boat Race!

After being forced to cancel the event last year due to the pandemic, our exciting Dragon Boat Race is back and bigger than ever this September.

Vicky Stackhouse, our events and challenges fundraiser, said: “The Dragon Boat Race is our first team event we’ve been able to host in over 18 months and it isn’t one to be missed! We’re so excited to bring the dynamic atmosphere and fierce competition of the race back to the beautiful lake at Pugneys Country Park.

It’s the perfect opportunity to bring groups of friends, colleagues or team mates of any kind together, possibly for the first time in a long time. It’s fun, exciting and also a fantastic way to raise vital funds for Forget Me Not, helping us care for the children and families we support across West Yorkshire.”

Susan Mountain, whose family we supported when her daughter, Maci, sadly died in 2017, has gathered a team to take part. She said: “I want to do the boat race because Forget Me Not is never far from my mind. It’s been a very difficult time for everyone and this is a really fun fundraiser.

It’s time to let our hair down, get out in the fresh air and have fun! We all need it after this crazy year. Forget Me Not is very close to my heart and we’re doing this for my beautiful Maci.”

‘Dynamic atmosphere, fierce competition’

If you don’t know about our Dragon Boat Race yet, let us break it down…

On the day, teams of paddlers and a drummer to keep the rhythm will race across the lake at Pugneys Country Park in brightly-coloured, dragon-themed boats to raise money for us.

No previous experience is required – just the competitive spirit and energy to take part in at least three 250m races. The fastest crews go through to the semis and finals, with medals for the top three.

And those watching from the shore will have plenty to entertain them too. The onsite caféForget Me Not pop up shops, tombola and face-painting means you can make a proper day of it.

Competitors will be encouraged to raise money for us by asking for sponsorship – money which will help fund the care and support we provide to children and families across West Yorkshire, including respite care, therapy and counselling, support groups and activities.

(The minimum number of people you’ll need to form a crew is 10 plus a drummer to keep the rhythm (the maximum is 16 + drummer). Each boat costs £300 and we’d love it if each team could raise at least £1,000 in sponsorship.
