‘You’re not alone’ – a wave of light in support of those who have lost a baby
Thousands of families experience the tragic death of a baby every year in the UK. And many of them have to go through this devastating experience alone, without any support.
Baby Loss Awareness Week (9th-15th October) is an annual UK-wide opportunity for bereaved parents, families and friends, to commemorate babies’ lives and to raise awareness about baby loss. The week closes with a nationwide Wave of Light when
buildings and landmarks light up in pink and blue and families light candles in memory of their babies.
To mark this important week, we’ll be hosting two very special remembrance events to give those who have gone through this terrible experience the chance to share a moment of reflection with other bereaved families and to commemorate their baby.
We also want to raise awareness about the support that is available, so that families in the future know who they can turn to, should this sadly happen to them.
At Russell House on 15th October, we’ll be holding a private event for families who have been supported by Forget Me Not. Families will be able to write their baby’s name on a lantern as part of a 380 lantern display and we’ll be lighting up the hospice in pink and blue at 7pm in support of those who have lost a baby.
We’re also hosting a special public event at The Piece Hall in Halifax on 15th October for anyone who has lost a baby. Families are invited to take part in the event in whatever way they feel comfortable. They can visit at any time during the week (11th-15th October) to tie a ribbon in their baby’s memory. Or people can come and write their baby’s name on a lantern on 15th October and then watch it being lit as part of a beautiful and poignant wave of light display at 7pm the same evening.
If people want to discuss their experiences, staff from Forget Me Not will be at The Piece Hall all day on 15th October 10am to 9pm.
Families who can’t make the event, or would prefer to mark the occasion at home, are invited to light a candle at home and leave a dedication to their little one online at Forget Me Not’s dedication page here.
Other local landmarks joining the Wave of Light by lighting up in blue and pink on the 15th October include:
- Xscape Castleford
- Piece Hall
- First Direct Arena
- Wainhouse Tower
- Bradford Town Hall
- Huddersfield University
- Kirklees Active Leisure (whose fitness classes will also be pink and blue).
